So you have heard about Kiosk Software and you want to know what such software can do for you. You go online and start searching for more information but you are still confused because there are different versions out there. Which version do you go for? Perhaps this article can help.

There are several good companies out there that sell kiosk software. When you visit their websites, you will immediately notice that there are various licensing plans. Prices can also vary greatly.

Plan 1 - The smallest plan is usually also the cheapest. This software version gives you the bare essentials. You are able to lock down a computer for security reasons. This means that the computer will prevent users from tampering with the operating system the moment it boots up. You will also be able to customize the browser to launch in full screen and to disable unwanted options. For instance, the URL bar is usually disabled to prevent users from accessing other websites. The desktop is also disabled to prevent tampering with the OS. Some special keyboard keys are disabled so that users cannot accidentally damage the system. This plan is good enough if you just one to release one or two public kiosks that provide basic information.

Plan 2 - Usually, the first plan is inadequate because it doesn't come with billing options. Many shop owners buy kiosk software because they want to be able to charge customers for using the kiosks. So the software needs to incorporate billing options such as accepting credit cards. Some kiosks can even be setup to accept coins. This is considered the standard version and is usually good enough for the majority of customers.

Plan 3 - If your intention is to launch multiple kiosks, then you will need at least an enterprise version of the software. This is a sophisticated piece of software that allows you to manage and maintain the kiosks from a central location. This is achieved using remote access. In other words, you don't have to be physically present at the locations to maintain the kiosks. You can easily update the kiosk software or perform other tasks via remote access. For some software, you may even need to setup your own private server solely for this purpose.

In sum, these are the features you need to look out for:

1) Lock down of PC.
2) Customization of browser.
3) Billing integration.
4) Remote access.

Don't be too hasty when it comes to making a buying decision. Most software vendors offer a free trial period (usually about 30 days). Do try out the software to see if it performs as it should, and then compare the pricing. That will help you make the right buying decision for your business.
